On Portraits of Anne of Cleves
I believe I have found the perfect quote for any portrait really before the invention of photography. It is from the BBC show ‘Warts and All- Portrait of a Prince” on King George IV. The painter Lucy Worsley takes one of the portraits to says this “… if the portrait artist is the only person you really know to take your picture (and he’s usually paid to do it-my bit), then who’s to stop you from rewriting history.” So from this I am now going to judge her portraits. Anne may truly have been really ugly and desperate for a husband or she may have been the pretty serene woman as represented in Holbain’s miniature. I prefer to believe the latter as Holbein seems to have really tryed to get his portraits as accurately as possible judging from other portraits of his.
